4th Announcement for AKN Annual Meeting, 2019
Dear all,

This is the last announcement before the 2019 AKN annual meeting next Monday!

Once again, on behalf of AKN officers and members, I am so much grateful to our sponsors who make the 2019 AKN meeting possible (KSBNS, KBRI, IBS, KIST, DGIST, Nexmos, 1STBIO, ISTN, SciTECH, D&D Pharmatech, Neuracle Science, GNT Pharma, GenDEPOT, 10X genomics).

1) Please go to the link below and PREREGISTER NOW if you have not done yet! The seated dinner will be guaranteed on two conditions: (1) you have to preregister and (2) you have to be there by 6:30 pm. If pre-registered, you do not need to register again at the registration desk but just confirm your name on the list of pre-registrants.

3rd Announcement for AKN Annual Meeting, 2019

안녕하십니까

10월 21일 (월요일, 6시 30분) 시카고 AKN 미팅을 앞두고 재미 신경과학도들의 모임인 AKN (Association of Korean Neuroscientists) 에서 몇가지 안내와 부탁말씀을 올립니다.

먼저, 공동주최를 하여주시는 한국 뇌신경과학회 (KSBNS), 기초과학연구원 (IBS) 신경사업단들, 한국뇌연구원 (KBRI) 과  올해도 후원하여주시는 KIST 뇌과학연구소, DGIST 뇌인지과학과 에 감사를 드립니다. 그리고 흔쾌히 후원을 하여주신 많은 회사들 Nexmos, 1STBIO, ISTN, SciTECH, D&D Pharmatech, Neuracle Science, GNT Pharma, GenDEPOT 에 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 덕분에 올해도 전세계에서 모이는 한국인 신경과학도들을 위한 만남과 교류의 장을 마련하게 되었읍니다.

1.   Predoctoral, Postdoctoral, Junior faculty awards 의 지원 마감일을 이틀연장하여 10월 3일 (목요일) 까지 받읍니다. 지원방식은 AKN 웹페이지나 https://akneuro.org/cms/ 상단의 “1st announcement” 을 참조바랍니다. 좋은 논문을 내신 분들의 많은 응모를 바라며, 올해 못받으시더라도 계속 응모를 바랍니다. 참고로 이전 수상자들중에는 여러번 도전하신 분들이 많읍니다.  

2. 현재 디너미팅 사전등록을 받고있읍니다. SFN abstract 도 같이 올려주시면 초록집을 만을어 곧 배포하겠읍니다. 디너 미팅에 참여 못하시더라도 아래 링크를 방문하셔서 abstract 를 올려주시면 감사하겠읍니다. 한인 신경과학자들간의 collaboration 을 촉진하는데 도움이 되었으면 하는 바램입니다.

3. 올해부터 미팅을 한국말로 진행하겠읍니다. 예일대 박인현, 스탠퍼드 이진형교수님이 공동사회를 보시게 됩니다. 세미나, 후원사, 수상자들 연구발표와 소개도 한국어를 원칙으로 하되, 영어로 하셔도 되겠읍니다. 그리고 구인광고등 알리시고 싶은 내용이 있으면 흥보물을 만들어오시면 당일 배포를 돕도록 하겠읍니다.

4.  AKN 웹페이지를 새로 디자인 합니다. 도움을 줄수있는 분이나, 추천하고 싶은 회사가 있으면 알려주시면 많은 도움이 되겠읍니다.

5. 미국 영주권 취득시에 드는 변호사비가 많이 비싸져서, 저렴하면서 양질의 서비스를 받을수있는 믿을만한 변호사를 찾는 분들이 많은줄 압니다. 저희가 믿고 추천할수 있는Ms. Rami Lee 변호사가 계십니다 (연락처: 상단의 “AKN Sponsor Ads”). 저희 AKN Council 교수님들도 영주권수속에 필요한 추천서를 제공하여 도움을 드릴수 있읍니다. 연락바랍니다.

6. AKN 미팅때 제공되는 음식이 맛없다고 하시는 분들도 있고, 너무 과하지 않느냐는 분들도 계시는 줄 압니다. 250명이 미팅을 가질수 있는 규모의 컨퍼런스룸을 저녁시간 사용하기 위해서는, 한식등 외부음식 반입은 허용되지않고, 호텔에서 제공되는 최저가의 음식을 선택할수밖에 없는 사정이 있읍니다 (물론 이정도도 저희 예산에는 버겁습니다). 송구스럽습니다만 여러분들의 이해를 바랍니다.

7. 마지막으로, 저희 AKN 미팅이 보다 더 유익한 교류의 장이 되고 후학들을 지원할수 있는 좋은 아이디어가 있으시면 언제라도 알려주십시요. 특히 올해 시카고 미팅에서, 유익한 정보나 강의를 제공하여주실수 있거나 그런 분들을 추천하여 주시면 고맙겠읍니다.

AKN Annual Meeting 2019: Second Announcement

This is the 2nd announcement for our 2019 AKN annual meeting co-hosted by AKN (Association of Korean Neuroscientists in America), KSBNS (한국뇌신경과학회), KBRI (한국뇌연구원) and IBS (기초과학연구원).


Once again we are so thankful to our sponsors, listed below, who provided the generous support for the AKN annual meeting in Chicago. As the result, we have the following exciting announcements.

First, we are currently accepting the application for AKN outstanding research awards (for pre-doctoral, postdoctoral, and junior faculty).
The deadline is Sept 30 (Wed), so please apply!
(see details in the 1st announcement on our AKN website (http://www.akneuro.org).

Owing to sponsors’ very generous donations, we can continue to provide each pre- or postdoctoral awardee with a $400 prize and junior faculty awardee with $1,000. We hope many of you apply for this great opportunity.

Second, the meeting will be at The Congress Plaza Hotel (520 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60605; https://www.congressplazahotel.com/) for seated dinner, on October 21 (6:30PM-9:30PM).
2016 AKN meeting was at this hotel. You can use SFN-provided free train tickets for an easy access from the convention center to the Hotel.

Third, we are now receiving pre-registration and collecting SFN abstracts presented by Korean neuroscientists attending 2019 SFN meeting.
Please go the link below to indicate your attendance of AKN meeting and/or uploading your SFN abstract. We plan to distribute these abstracts at least a few days before the SFN meeting.

AKN Annual Meeting 2019: First Announcement

Dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of the AKN (Association of Korean Neuroscientists in America http://www.akneuro.org), we announce the 2019 AKN meeting and AKN Research Awards. This meeting will be co-hosted by KSBNS, IBS and KBRI. Please help us disseminate this information by sharing with the colleagues in your institution or elsewhere. We would greatly appreciate your help.


AKN Meeting:

  • Location: The Congress Plaza Hotel (https://www.congressplazahotel.com/
    • 520 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60605 (just next to the Millennium Park, accessible from/to Metro lines)
  • Date: October 21, 2019 (Monday)
  • Time: 6:30-9:30 PM (seated dinner included)


Pre-registration will be required and accepted until the limited seats are filled. The details of the pre-registration, meeting’s format and seat arrangement will be provided in the 2nd announcement in early October. Please mark the date for now.


AKN Outstanding Research Awards:


We will present AKN Outstanding Research Awards in four different categories:
Postdoctoral abroad, Postdoctoral in Korea, Pre-doctoral abroad, and Pre-doctoral in Korea.

The number of awards may vary, depending on the number of qualified applicants and the availability of funding. Each award recipient will receive a $400 prize along with an award certificate. Award recipients will be selected according to 1) the quality of their abstract and 2) their research accomplishments during the current career status. An award recipient must be physically present at the award ceremony (if not, the awardee will be disqualified).


There is a special category for the Junior Faculty Award. One or two winners will be selected from junior members (2-5 years of faculty appointment) at the rank of Assistant Professor or an equivalent level at an academic institution in North America. We will give special emphasis to the applicant’s academic and scientific accomplishments as an independent principal investigator (i.e., senior-author publication, R01, seminars etc.).


The winner will be invited to present their work orally at the meeting and given a $1,000 prize.

What to send

  • a full CV (including complete publication record) for all applicants
  • a copy of the SfN abstract for poster/oral presentation and related information (presentation time & poster board number) for student and postdoctoral applicants - not necessary for Junior Faculty Award applicants)
The format of the application material – one PDF file.

Disqualifications – 1) previous winners of the same category awards; 2) applicants who are over-qualified (over 5 years in the current position, appointment to a higher position than the category applied for, etc.); and 3) non-presenting author of the abstract (for students/postdoctoral applicants).
