Department of Brain Science, DGIST

DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology) is a government-funded research-focused higher educational institute located in Daegu, South Korea. DGIST offers programs for Doctorate, Masters, and Bachelor’s degrees in the field of science and engineering. It launched the graduate program first in March 2011 and is opening undergraduate program in 2014. DGIST is pursuing international recognition as the world-leading convergence science-oriented research university.

The Department of Brain Science at DGIST (http://home.dgist.ac.kr/brain/) is the first department dedicated to brain science in Korea. We are actively recruiting excellent brain scientists in all areas of brain science. Multi-disciplinary collaboration in the field of neurodegeneration, neurometabolism, and chemical sensory system is particularly encouraged.

Our department is growing fast. Currently we have 8 fulltime faculty members and 53 graduate students. Our department boasts state-of-the-art research facilities. Neuroimaging facility is equipped with super-resolution microscope, multi-photon microscope, live confocal microscope as well as conventional confocal and vivatome microscopes and workstation for data handling. We also have core facilities for histology, biochemistry, electrophysiology and cell culture, and will open neurobehavior core lab next year. Our department hosts Neurometabolomics Excellence Research Center (NERC) sponsored by Agilent Technologies USA. This center will play a critical role in discovering novel biological principles of brain function and leading neurometabolomics research in metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. New central animal facility (the size of 5,400 square meter) will open next year to accommodate rodents and mid-sized animals at DGIST.

If you would like to learn more about us, please contact Dr. Seong-Woon Yu (yusw@dgist.ac.kr) to arrange time during this 2013 SFN/AKN meeting.
